Choosing Appropriate Power Chargers

Majority of people own some sort of electronic device. Granted, they all run out of power sometime, and you will need to recharge them for use. This can be done either using a charger or wirelessly. Using chargers is the most common method used.

The power supply is an integral part of most electronics. However, most people tend to overlook it. They may end up buying chargers that are low in wattage and output and this sacrifices on the reliability and quality of the charging time. All electronics have inputs and outputs. Input is what starts the electrical circuit.

What should I consider when buying a power adapter or charger for my electronics?

  • Wattage requirements - Before buying a charger or an adapter, you should be aware of the voltage or watts that your electronic device requires. For example, if it is a laptop, the voltage output is found on the adapter. The output voltage is usually listed as direct current (DC) voltage. A DC adapter is a converter for alternating current (AC) to DC that is usable by the laptop.
  • Rating - After figuring out how much output voltage your device requires, you may need to consider the long-term energy savings. Some power supply units and chargers tend to be more energy efficient than others.
  • Compatibility - When buying a replacement charger for example, for your phone, ensure it is the connector type. i.e. it should work on your phone.

What is the difference between AC and DC?

Alternating current is the flow of charge that changes rapidly and periodically. It is the type of power used in large industries homes and buildings. AC is produced by an alternator. AC if presented physically, it would look like a wavy line. DC, on the other hand, would appear in a straight line. Direct current is the flow of electrons in a unidirectional flow. It is the kind of power found in batteries, and it is what most electronic devices use.

What are some of the types of chargers I can buy?

There are various types of chargers, and the selection of the most appropriate will depend on your needs.

Here are some of them:

  • Wall charger - This is usually the one that comes when you are buying any device, for example, a phone. They are available in either two-pin or three-pin. You plug them on the wall, and they become usable. They have a detachable AC cord that you use.
  • Car socket chargers - These are built to fit into the cigarette lighter socket in the vehicles. They usually have a transformer that conducts electric current.
  • Portable chargers - These are components that store electric current so that you can use it later. For example, power banks. They usually have ports where you can plug-in your devices.
