Get More Bass with 12-inch Subwoofers

Offering an enhanced audio experience in your vehicle, Alpine Type R car subwoofers give you that extra bass and power handling that's lacking in your car stereo system. Its Type-R series provides extreme clarity without compromising on volume or deep bass performance. Type-R woofers are available with various levels of RMS, SPL, and ohm ratings for you to select the speaker system that's right for your setup.

What Should You Look for When Buying Car Subwoofers?

As a general rule, the bigger the subwoofer you buy, the bigger the sound it's going to produce, but the type of enclosure that houses it can affect the sound. In most situations, the space available inside of your vehicle is going to limit you, so always measure first before purchasing a woofer for your car.

  • Check the power levels of the subwoofer, with a higher RMS value indicating more bass. Keep in mind that you need a head unit or amplifier that matches, or exceeds, the subwoofer's RMS to effectively power it.
  • Subwoofers with a higher SPL rating don't require as much power to produce high volumes as those with low SPL ratings, which is important if your head unit or amp is underpowered.
  • You also need to match the impedance of your amp and subwoofer, expressed in ohms, and check its watts RMS requirements.

Which Type of Enclosure Should You Select?

The enclosure is the box that encases the subwoofer and generally falls into three main categories: sealed, ported, and bandpass. You should base the type of enclosure you select on the bass experience you want to achieve.

  • A sealed enclosure is good for an exceptionally deep bass sound, while being tight and accurate.
  • The bass sound of ported and bandpass enclosures is typically not as deep or accurate, but they can produce a much louder sound than sealed enclosure subwoofers.
  • You can also find subwoofers that work without an enclosure that you can mount inside an airtight trunk that effectively works as the enclosure.

Should You Buy a Single or Dual Voice Coil Subwoofer?

Most Alpine Type-R subwoofers come with a single voice coil, but when you want more flexibility in wiring your car sound system, a dual voice coil subwoofer is a good option.

  • Dual voice coil subwoofers use two separate voice coils mounted on one cylinder, but each of which has its own connections.
  • They offer multiple wiring options, including parallel, series, and independent wiring of each voice coil to a separate channel of your amplifier.
