Aquarium UV Sterilizers

Ultraviolet sterilizers are used in aquariums in order to reduce algae growth and to eliminate infectious bacteria, parasites, and viruses that could cause illness in fish. Once infectious organisms have been irradiated by the ultraviolet sterilizer, they will no longer be able to reproduce and cause an outbreak of disease in the fish. These ultraviolet sterilizers come in a range of wattage capacities, sizes, and styles to suit the needs of your fish tank.

What are the features of a UV sterilizer for an aquarium?
  • Built-in pump: An aquarium UV sterilizer may have a built in pump that moves the water through the translucent tubing and past the ultraviolet light bulb and into the filter. The aquatics pump eliminates the need for a separate set of tubing, pumping, and aquarium water filtration system.
  • Built-in filter: A built-in carbon or sponge aquarium water filtration unit may be included with the UV sterilizer. The aquarium filtration system removes the fish waste, which helps to lower the amount of the algae and bacteria that feed on the excess nutrients provided by the waste.
  • Turbidity reduction: UV sterilizers reduce the turbidity of the aquarium water in the fish tank by cutting down the growth of algae and bacteria, that could otherwise proliferate and leave scum on the walls and rocks of the aquarium.
How do you choose UV sterilizers for aquariums?
  • Choose the filtration capacity: UV sterilizers for aquariums come in a range of sizes. Choose the filtration capacity that matches the size of your aquarium, such as 20 gallons, 50 gallons, or larger.
  • Select the type of water: Sterilizers are available for freshwater aquariums and saltwater aquariums.
  • Choose a manufacturer: There are many manufacturers of sterilizers for aquariums. The manufacturers of UV sterilizers include Coralife, UV Pro, Jebao, and Green Killing Machine.
How do you install a UV sterilizer in an aquarium?

It is important to install the UV sterilizer properly in your aquarium so that it can efficiently irradiate the fresh water or salt water as it moves through the aquarium air pump and past the UV light. To install the UV light sterilizer:

  1. Read through the sterilizer's label and ensure that you have an aquarium air pump that has the proper flow rate for the UV light to fully irradiate the water.
  2. Assemble the tubing and elbows for the air pump. Determine how the particular UV sterilizer needs to be attached to the aquarium. Some UV sterilizers mount onto the lid of the aquarium tank. Other UV sterilizers may need to hang off the back of the aquarium or sit at the bottom of the aquarium.
  3. Note the inlet and outlet ends of the air pump tubing, and cut the tubing to the right length so that the air pump can be placed at an ideal distance from the UV sterilizer.
  4. Connect the tubing to the UV sterilizer and the aquarium air pump. Put on a pair of cotton gloves and install the UV lamp bulb and quartz sleeve.
  5. Turn on the pump and check for leaks before you turn on the UV lamp.
