What to Know When Selecting a Canon Flatbed Scanner
A flatbed scanner allows you to save digital copies of documents. In the home or office setting, the flatbed scanner can scan the file and save it to a mobile storage device, server, or internal or external hard drive. There are many features, functions, and options to consider when you select a Canon flatbed scanner.
What are the network and connectivity options for the scanners? The available network and connectivity options for the flatbeds that scan documents include:
- USB: The scan systems may use USB 1.0, USB 1.1, or USB 2.0 connectivity.
- Wireless: They may scan and send files using a wireless connection.
- Parallel: The system may scan and save files over a parallel or IEEE 1284 setup.
- FireWire: The software may allow for the use of a FireWire connection for the scan and saving functions.
The available levels of resolution for the flatbed scanners are measured in dots per inch (dpi) and include:
- 600 by 600 dpi to 600 by 1,200 dpi
- 1,200 by 1,200 dpi
- 2,400 by 4,800 dpi to 4,800 by 4,800 dpi
- 4,800 by 9,600 dpi to 9600 by 9600 dpi
The available image sensor types include:
- CCD: CCD refers to charge-coupled device. It uses an analog to digital converter to create low-noise images.
- CMOS: CMOS refers to complementary metal-oxide semiconductor. It uses multiple transistors to read each pixel and scan it separately.
- CIS: CIS, or contact image sensor, is a system that uses a linear array of detectors, mirrors, and lenses to record the image.
The color depth of the flatbed refers to the amount of information that the scanner gathers as it scans a document or a photograph. If the document is in grayscale, the scanner can pick up 256 shades of gray. For color depth, there are 16-, 24-, and 36-bit size options. A 36-bit scanner provides up to 68 million colors in the scanned document or photograph. The higher the number, the greater the size of the files that are generated. Lower bit sizes have a speed of three to five documents captured per minute, while higher-bit setups have a speed to capture one to three documents per minute.
What type of operating software does the office scanner use? These office flatbed scanner products are designed to work either with Apple iOS or on the Windows operating system. The flatbed scanner's software can work with several different versions of these operating systems. When the flatbed scanner is connected to the internet by USB or other connectivity, it can update its software through the USB connection when the operating system has an upgrade.
