Coffee Filters

Grabbing that morning cup of coffee can be a good way to start your day and is the daily routine for many. Whether it is a light roast or a flavorful bold taste you are looking for, you can create any distinct flavor you want right at home. The key to getting a great-tasting product is knowing how to properly filter the grounds through the machine you are using.

What are the different types of coffee filters?

Brewing a cup of coffee with the right filter for the job is important to get the taste you want from the specific product you are using. The key to knowing what type of filter to use depends mostly on the type of machine you are using to make it.

  • Disposable paper filters are the most common type used in traditional multiple-cup coffee machines. These filters are made from a crepe paper material and are meant to be single-use only for each mug or carafe that you make.
  • Single-serve brewing machines often use K-cups or pods that contain a single serve amount of grounds within a plastic cup or the filter material.
What are reusable filters?

If you are an eco-conscious coffee drinker, you may not want to have all of the paper waste that traditional machines make for each cup or carafe of your favorite hot drink. For these consumers, there is a range of reusable filter products available. These products are made from materials such as polyester, nylon, or stainless steel mesh attached to a plastic frame so that you can still brew to your desired strength. You can choose from reusable coffee filters that fit traditional machines as well as reusable options for pod and K-cup style machines.

How do you choose which coffee filter to use?

To make great-tasting coffee, you will want to use the correct coffee filters for your machine. This will also ensure that your coffee maker will work properly without getting clogged during the drip process.

  • The instructions that came with your coffee maker will provide the recommended size and type of coffee filters you should use with each brew. The most common sizes are 2 1/4 inches to 5 1/4 inches from the top of the fold line. Filters come in cone or basket shapes, depending on your coffee maker.
  • If you want to switch from the recommended single-serve disposable type to a reusable type, make sure the size and shape of the coffee filters are compatible. The size equivalent should be listed on the reusable filter package.
