Get Computing Power and Speed With an AMD Quad Core Motherboard and CPU Combo

When you’re at your desk and want to play video games, watch streaming content, or finish a presentation for work, it can be important to have a computer with certain capabilities in front of you. Two of the most critical parts of a computing system are the motherboard and the CPU. Various AMD quad core motherboard and CPU combos are available.

How are the motherboard and CPU related?

The motherboard is the circuit board on which other core components are connected. One of those components is the central processing unit (CPU). This unit is a chip that sits on the motherboard. For certain models, it's called an APU, which stands for accelerated processing unit.

The two parts have to be compatible with each other in order for everything to work correctly. Each motherboard is only designed to accept specific types of processors. When your two parts come together in a set, you can be confident that they'll work together in terms of the following:

  • Physical layout
  • Memory capacity
  • Chipset
What distinguishes a quad core processor?

A quad core processor is a type of chip that has four units, or cores, that function independently and can complement each other. Since they can all run instructions simultaneously, the overall speed of a computer can increase. This type of processing is called parallel processing. In general, quad core processors are more efficient than dual core or single core units, though the gains are not necessarily twice or quadruple the original speed.

How do you measure computing speed?

The speed at which a processor can work is either referred to as clock speed or operating frequency. It's measured in gigahertz (GHz), and the level of GHz translates into how many billions of times in a minute the internal clock can pulse into the microprocessor. Generally, the more GHz a computer has, the faster it will run.

What is form factor?

Form factor is a way to describe the size of a motherboard. There are many different types of form factors, including the following:

  • Mini-ITX: A mini-ITX is no larger than 17cm by 17 cm. It has two RAM slots, one expansion slot, either one or zero graphics cards, and anywhere from two to six SATA ports.
  • Micro-ATX: A micro-ATX is no larger than 24.4 cm by 24.4 cm. It can have anywhere from two to four RAM slots and expansions slots. It has at least one graphics card and can have four to eight SATA ports.
  • ATX: The largest of the three, the ATX has a maximum size of 30.5 cm by 24.4 cm. It can have up to eight RAM slots and up to seven expansion slots. It could have anywhere between one and four graphics cards and up to 12 SATA ports.
