Land Rover Defenders built in different years used different engine models. A list of them follows. See the manufacturer site for details.

  • Land Rover Defender 110: The 110 model was initially sold in 1983 with 2.25-litre petrol and diesel engines. A small number of 110s used a 3.2-litre V8 engine. In 1985, the basic diesel engine was upgraded to a 2.5-litre engine with four cylinders. A diesel turbocharged engine was introduced in 1986 with a re-engineered crankshaft, Teflon-coated pistons, and valves made of a nickel-steel alloy.
  • Land Rover Defender 130: The 130 model was introduced in 1990. It sported a proprietary turbo-diesel engine called the 200TDi, which featured an alloy cylinder head, improved turbocharging, intercooling, and direct injection. In 1994, the 300Tdi engine was introduced. It was a complete redesign of the Tdi engine that aimed to give the Defender even more power.
  • 1998 Land Rover Defender: In 1998, the Land Rover Defender got a new engine, which was dubbed the Td5. The Td5 was a 2.5-litre, five-cylinder inline turbo-diesel engine. Unlike the Td1, which it replaced, the Td5 met new Euro III emissions standards.
  • 2007 Land Rover Defender: The Td5 was the last Defender engine to be built in-house. In 2007, the Td5 was replaced by a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder Puma engine from Ford’s Duratorq line.
  • 2012 Land Rover: The Puma engine did not meet Euro V emissions standards, so it was replaced by a 2.2-litre ZSD-422 Duratorq engine.
