Finding the Proper Welding Apron

Whether you are a professional welder or you need to use welding equipment for hobbies or projects in your spare time, having the right equipment is a must. Because welding essentially involves a blowtorch heated at an extreme temperature, protection, safety, and caution are all imperative to the job. One of the absolute musts when it comes to welding is a solid welding apron.

What Are Some Common Welding Apron Materials?

There are a few different types of welding apron materials when it comes to shopping. Some of these include:

  • Leather: Most welding aprons or bibs will have a strong leather construction. This is to help protect you from the sparks and flame. Leather protects not only you, but your clothes as well.
  • Cotton or cotton canvas: This is another choice when it comes to apron construction. Many cotton aprons are treated with flame retardant material. However, it's good to keep in mind that your apron will lose this protective guard after one toss in the washer.
  • Denim or cowhide: These are also strong and usable materials for welding apron construction. These are more economical choices, but do not offer as much protection as a leather apron. Kevlar is also an option, though seen less often than other materials.

What Types of Features Should I Look For?

It definitely depends upon your welding style when it comes to what attributes you need in a welding apron. There are a few key features to keep in mind as you make your selection:

  • Waist pockets: An apron with waist pockets can be very beneficial when you're on the job. While you won't store anything hot or corrosive, pockets give you a place to put other items you need close at hand.
  • Waist strap: This is another top feature of a welding apron, as its adjustable design can help keep the apron snug to your body.
  • Buckle: Similar to a strap, a buckle can either help you fasten your apron, or tie the straps more tightly around your shoulders.

How Can I Choose a Quality Apron?

To ensure that your apron or bib will last you for years to come, there are a few things to mull over as you're choosing your apron.

  • Stitching: Look for an apron with thick, sturdy stitching, with tough thread. As your apron may come into contact with heat and other corrosive materials or elements, you want your apron to last.
  • Size: You also want to make sure that your protective apron is appropriately sized for your body. Some of the best aprons are built well as "one-size-fits-all" types, while size does matter with inferior aprons.
  • Comfortable Construction: Make sure you pick a material that's not only protective, but comfortable. If you're truly not comfortable in denim or leather, opt for cotton canvas, cotton, or cowhide protective aprons.
