How do you load 120 film?

Loading film in an old style Kiev 88 is as follows:

  1. The cocking indicator windows on the right side of the magazine and body should show white. If not, fire the shutter, and mount the magazine on the body. Then, cock the shutter. Both flags should now be white.
  2. Make sure the frame counter window is black. If not, fire the shutter until it is.
  3. Lift the roll holder lock and turn it counter-clockwise as far as it'll go. Then, holding the lock in position, pull the roll holder out of the magazine.
  4. Insert a roll of film into the feed position and pull out a couple inches of leader. Pull the leader back and across the magazine's pressure plate. The colored side of the leader should be against the pressure plate with the edge of the paper under the chrome lip at the edge of the pressure plate. Then, put the end of the leader into the slot of the take-up spool.
  5. Turning the spool toward you, wind two or three turns of paper around the spool. Make sure the paper is feeding on straight and wrapped tightly. Then, pull a bit more off the feed roll until the spool can be installed in the take-up position. Make sure the film drive keys seat properly into the slots.
  6. Holding the roll holder lock tightly in the counter-clockwise position, insert the roll holder into the housing. If it won't fit completely in, lift one of the wings of the winding key on the opposite end of the housing and turn it until the roll holder slides in. Now turn the lock clockwise, and fold the key down to lock it.
  7. Close the viewing window cover and turn the winding key counter-clockwise as far as it will go. This resets the film counter to the number 1. Leaving this step out may cause the counter to not advance and may result in erratic frame spacing.
