Meccano
Meccano, a model construction system created by Frank Hornby, is not only designed as an educational toy, but it supports STEM learning (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). By utilizing reusable angle girders, axles and gears, metal strips, plates, plastic pieces, and wheels, all of which are connected by bolts, nuts, and set screws, mechanical devices and working car, building and other models can be constructed. Used in schools and universities to demonstrate engineering and mechanical disciplines, Meccano is not only a building set that allows you to construct models, but it can help inspire new generations of engineers, architects, and other professionals.
What sorts of Meccano building kits are available?Several Meccano construction kits are available for varying age groups that include everything needed to build toys, buildings, robots, cars, and more. The building sets are available in a variety of conditions from new and sealed to slightly used. There are vintage sets and newer kits to choose from, along with lots that contain multiple kits and random parts needed for replacements.
What is STEM learning, and how is Meccano part of it?STEM is an educational platform built around science, technology, engineering, and math. The Meccano construction sets present STEM concepts in the form of a construction toy in an effort to engage the interest of children who might one day grow up to be scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and more.
Later Meccano sets are designed around STEM. The model kits allow children to use unique plastic and metal components of varying sizes and shapes to build working models. The collection offers real parts including frame/shell structures, gears, levers, mechanisms, motors, pulleys, programming, simple machines, and wheels to increase learning opportunities and provide the flexibility needed to make the models more fun to play with.
Later in Meccano's timeline, the company began featuring robotics with Meccanoid G15 and Meccanoid G15KS, part of its new advanced, open-source robotics platform. The platform is easy to use and offers builders of all ages and skill levels access to learn the STEM core values while teaching beginning-level coding, construction, and robotics.
Which languages does Meccanoid include for programming?Meccanoid is pre-programmed for US English, but the language can be changed to UK English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish (Americas), Spanish (EU), and Swedish.
To change languages, you'll need access to the Internet. Then you'll need to complete these steps in order.
- Download Meccano's Robot Update software.
- Install the software on your computer or device once the download is complete.
- Insert the micro end into the Meccabrain port to connect your USB cable to the computer or device.
- Initiate the software and wait for Meccabrain recognition.
- Select the correct robot in the first drop-down menu.
- Select the desired language for your Meccanoid in the "Select Language" menu.
- Select the most recent update in the last menu.
- Check off "Total Memory Wipe" and click the large blue update button to complete for best results.
