Netgear Wi-Fi Antenna

In today's world, poor Wi-Fi range seems almost unthinkable and network users constantly look for better solutions that would increase the coverage and boost the Internet signal. Upgrading your wireless router is one way to improve your office or home network. However, you could also opt for external antennas that you could add to your Netgear router and thus get the most out of your device.

How do I Make Sure the Netgear Antenna is Compatible with my Router?

Before purchasing antennacables for better Wi-Fi range, you need to make sure they are compatible with your router.

  • Read the product description carefully: Pay attention to the list of devices mentioned in the description and make sure that yours is on the list. Be sure to check the model number.
  • Know the router type: Different routers use different wireless technologies or standards, such as wireless N on the N routers. Some wireless antennas could also be universal. The frequency bands, expressed in GHz, may also vary router by router, so you should compare those as well when looking for an antenna.

What is the Difference Between Directional and Omnidirectional Antennas?

For your wireless devices, you could either use a directional or an omnidirectional antenna. Generally, wireless adapters require directional antennas pointing towards the wireless routers, while you can most efficiently boost your router signal with an omnidirectional antenna.

  • Directional antennas: These are high gain antennas (expressed in dBi), meaning that they transmit and receive further than their omnidirectionalcounterparts, creating a wireless network with broader coverage. They are, however, more limited in terms of the direction to and from which they transmit.
  • Omni-directional antennas: Non-directional or omnidirectionalantennas send and receive in all directions. Most of Netgear's antennas fall under this type.

How do I Replace an Antenna on my Device?

Replacing external antennas should be an easy task that you can complete with no tools. The task might be slightly harder if you also purchased a new adapter for your network. It also depends on the kind of device for which you use the Wi-Fi.

  • Replacing a router antenna: Screw off the old one and screw on the new one. Note that not all external antennas are removable and thus cannot be replaced. You can test this on your device before starting to look for one.
  • Upgrading a laptop: You can upgrade your laptop with a wireless adapter. Plug it into the PC card or USB port.
  • Upgrading a desktop computer: This upgrade process could be as easy as screwing off the old ones and installing new ones. Installing a totally new adapter might require you to open up the computer to install a PCI adapter. USB adapters simply need plugging in.
