Achieve Optimum Performance Using DDR4 SDRAM Computer Memory

Consumer technology is an industry that evolves faster than many others because of the quest to have faster performance in components of the same size or smaller than their predecessors. One example is DDR4 SDRAM, a standard introduced in 2014 as the successor to DDR3 SDRAM. Each module is faster than modules from the previous standard and allows for higher data capacities than DDR3. Equipping your computer with these modules allows your machine to perform multiple tasks seamlessly along with faster overall system performance, especially when opening frequently-used applications that the system has allocated in its cache.

What Is DDR4 SDRAM?

  • DDR4: This stands for double data rate fourth-generation and has a high bandwidth interface. This type of memory is not compatible with its predecessors and hence cannot be combined with those modules let alone be used in a motherboard that supports only DDR3 SDRAM. These can achieve clock speeds of 2133 MHz up to 2666 MHz and upwards to 3200 MHz and more. Capacities range from 4 GB to 8 GB, and 16 GB variants. DDR4 is also able to reduce its power consumption compared to DDR3 SDRAM.
  • SDRAM: This stands for synchronous dynamic random access memory and has been in use since 1993. This type of RAM synchronizes with the clock speed of the CPU to improve operational efficiency as well as reducing latency.
  • DIMM and SO-DIMM: The former stands for dual in-line memory module and is the type of RAM stick used in a desktop computer setup. They are shorter in height but longer in length than laptop memory because of the need for clearance to be compatible with other components that take up space. The other stands for small outline dual in-line memory and is meant for laptop applications.

How Do I Choose a DDR4 RAM Module?

  • Motherboard Compatibility: To decide on a type of DDR4 RAM, such as those from Samsung, determine whether your current motherboard or the one you plan to buy can actually support it. Under the RAM or memory spec in the motherboard manual, look for the DDR4 spec to know if it works. A motherboard should also indicate the maximum frequency in MHz that it can use along with the ability to overclock the RAM.
  • Capacity: For a basic computer setup, 4 GB should do fine using a high-frequency module like a 2666 MHz stick. On the other hand, 8 GB presents a good balance between capabilities for moderate workloads and increased workloads when gaming and doing harder work. If the budget permits, do consider at least 16 GB of Samsung memory to eliminate any type of memory performance bottlenecks.
