How to Shop for an 80 GB IDE Hard Drive
When you're looking for an internal hard drive, one of the most important things you want to take into consideration is its durability. Long known for providing quality internal drives such as the Seagate Barracuda, Seagate is a leader in the production of many types of hard drives and storage devices. When trying to find the right one that works for you, there are several options to choose from.
What Type of Internal Hard Drive Do I Need?
When looking for a hard drive with extra GB, you may be a bit stymied by all of the acronyms and different types. When you're not sure exactly which type you need, there are some ways to narrow it down.
- IDE - This type of drive is compatible with nearly every computer, and IDE is easy and seamless even for a hardware novice to install. IDE was the gold standard for hard drives until SATA came along. IDE hard drives are not obsolete but they are less popular than they used to be, particularity because of the slower MB transfer speed.
- SATA - This type of internal hard drive has all but replaced IDE in the computing world. It offers fast speeds and turnaround times with a high MB transfer speed. This hard drive connects right to the motherboard. There are several type of SATA drives, I and II.
- PATA or EIDE - This type of drive is essentially an IDE hard drive, which provides the same type of interface. It is compatible with SATA HDDs and works on most any laptop or desktop computer.
Why Use an Internal Drive?
There are several reasons why you'd want to look for a new or replacement internal hard drive, such as:
- Extra storage. If your current hard drive doesn't have enough GB to hold all of your files, then you're quickly running out of memory. You can always install a second hard drive with more GB to free up space on your desktop.
- Backup. Many users also install an extra hard drive on their computer to use as a backup.
- Partition. An IDE hard drive is a good option for when your goal is to partition a drive.
- Repair. If your initial hard drive has failed, it's simply time to find a replacement.
What Are HDD Features to Consider?
Whether you're looking for a replacement or extra HDD, there are a few things to think about as you're perusing your options:
- Storage. One of the most important things about a new unit is how much GB it has. Seagate Barracuda drives have several GB options, ranging from lower amounts, such as 80 GB, to higher amounts of GB and TB (terabytes).
- Speed. RPM is important, as it is equated directly with speed. Look for a drive that has 7200 RPM or higher for quicker transfer rates.
- Cache. Ensure that your new HDD has a relevant amount of cache to act as a buffer.
