What You Need to Know About Alienware Monitors

Alienware, a subsidiary of Dell, specializes in all kinds of hardware for hardcore gamers. If you are in the market for cutting-edge monitors that will unlock the true potential of your computer's graphical capabilities, then Alienware may have the right technology for you. You'll find a variety of Alienware monitors on eBay.

How do you choose the right monitor?

Apart from basic specs, such as screen size and display outputs, you should consider the following features in your Alienware monitor:

  • Resolution: The resolution is the number of pixels on the screen. This is the most common measurement for the amount of detail the monitor can display. For gaming purposes, the most common resolutions are 1920x1080 (1080p), 2560x1440 (1440p), or 3840x2160 (2160p or 4K resolution). Each subsequent resolution is capable of higher details.
  • Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio is the number of horizontal pixels by the number of vertical pixels. The typical widescreen format is 16:9, but an ultra-widescreen monitor may have a ratio of 21:9 instead, which allows for extra screen space.
  • Refresh rate: The refresh rate measures the number of times the monitor refreshes its image every second. For gaming purposes especially, a higher refresh rate tends to result in a smoother experience.
  • Response time: The response time measures the time it takes for a pixel to change from black to white or to different shades of gray. A lower response time generally results in less lag and ghosting.
What are FreeSync and G-Sync?

FreeSync and G-Sync are the brand names for two similar types of technology for LCD displays. They are designed to minimize stuttering, lagging, and screen tearing, which can result from the poor alignment between the monitor's refresh rate and the frame rate of the game. The technologies sync the refresh rate and frame rate together without any sacrifice in performance. The main difference between them is that FreeSync is an AMD technology and will only work with AMD GPUs, whereas G-Sync is a Nvidia technology and only works with Nvidia GPUs. You must own a compatible monitor as well; however, and most monitors use only one technology exclusively.

What is the difference between TN, VA, and IPS displays?

TN, which stands for twisted nematic, and IPS, which stands for in-plane switching, are two types of LCD technologies that determine how the liquid crystals are aligned. IPS was designed to remedy the basic problem with TN displays. IPS displays still retain the same basic color quality from much wider angles. However, the technology has the downside of longer response times and more power consumption. The third type of display known as vertical alignment, or VA, also has higher contrast ratios and wider viewing angles than TN, though not quite on the level of IPS.
